An existing one story, ranch style home in the western end of Mar Vista was gutted and turned into a modern two story residence more suitable to the needs of Westside Los Angeles living. The first floor was kept intact, however, walls were opened to create a large kitchen opposite a living / family room. One existing bedroom was retained and turned into a guest suite. The kitchen and living room open directly to terrace yard, waterfall and Koi pond. The dining room is flanked by a large indoor saltwater fish tank and glass backed shelves, shielding the entry door.

An open stair, separating the kitchen and living room, leads to three new upstairs bedrooms with views of the tree lined street and terraced hillside. The master bedroom and bath also have western views to the ocean and take advantage of the cool prevailing ocean breezes for natural cooling and sun light. Materials are contemporary to match the design including smooth stucco, aluminum cladded wood windows, maple floors and slate tile. High ceilings on the second level counteract the existing lower ceilings on the first floor.
